Candaulism, the night I knocked on the door of my fantasy

Two years ago, while we were living abroad, Adrien suggested a challenge.

Meet ten men in one month.

Ten strangers. One meeting with each of them. None was ever meant to come back into my life a second time. Among them, one had to be much older than I was. Another had to match none of my usual physical criteria. For everyone else, I was free to choose.

When Adrien presented the idea to me, I felt immense apprehension. But almost immediately, something lit up inside me.

Because this challenge didn't come out of nowhere.

For a long time, I had carried a fantasy I had never really dared to face. The fantasy of going to meet a perfect stranger in a hotel room. Arriving alone. Knocking on a door. Knowing only a few photos, a voice, a few messages about the man who would open it. And letting the rest be decided between four walls.

Adrien had guessed this desire. Or maybe I had finally left him enough clues for him to understand it.

He hadn't just accepted my fantasy. He had given it a shape. Rules. Tension. A countdown.

And above all, he had left me the possibility of stopping everything at any moment.

We had even chosen a word. One single word I could say if I no longer felt safe. Adrien would be right next to me, ready to enter the room immediately.

That evening, though, I had no desire to say that word.

The first man was Canadian. Younger than me. He was twenty-eight, I was forty. He was tall, very muscular, with a bright face and a smile that had drawn me in on Tinder right away.

We had talked for a few days. Adrien had seen his profile. We had chosen him together.

For that man, however, the story was different. He thought he was meeting a married woman in the middle of a midlife crisis, a woman cheating on her husband because she needed to feel alive. He had no idea that in reality, my husband was just a few meters away. Above all, he had no idea that he would be part, without knowing it, of a game that had begun long before our first message.

Before I left, Adrien chose my outfit.

A very fitted black dress that followed every curve of my body. Underneath, nothing. No bra, no panties.

He took a photo of me. I was standing in front of him, dressed for another man, with that strange feeling of belonging to him more than ever at the very moment I was about to leave.

Then he kissed me.

He said nothing.

His silence unsettled me more than any sentence could have. In that kiss there was his desire, his trust, his pride, and maybe already the impatience of wanting to know what would happen next.

In front of the bedroom door, though, all my confidence collapsed.

My hands were sweaty. My heart was beating so hard it felt like it could be heard from the hallway. I looked at that door, wondering whether I was truly capable of going through it.

It had been fifteen years since I had shared my life with Adrien.

Fifteen years since I had kissed another man.

Fifteen years since I had touched another body.

Behind that door was a stranger, but also a version of myself I didn't yet know.

I thought about Adrien. About our trip. About everything we had begun to admit to each other since we were living far from home. About that new freedom pushing us to talk about desires we had long kept silent.

I also thought about my fantasy.

I didn't want to imagine it anymore. I wanted to live it.

So I knocked.

The door opened.

We looked at each other for a few seconds before exchanging a simple hello, awkward and embarrassed.

He smiled at me.

I remember that smile perfectly.

It was beautiful. Even more handsome than in his photos. Tall, athletic, visibly impressed. His shyness immediately reassured me, but above all it created an unexpected feeling in me.

I was the one with the power.

I was the one who had come all the way here.

I was the one who was forty, wearing a dress chosen by my husband and nothing underneath.

I was the one who could see in the eyes of a twenty-eight-year-old man that he desired me deeply.

We had a drink. We talked about everything and nothing, about the country where I lived, about my trip, about what I had told him about my life. He tried to seem relaxed. So did I.

In my bag, my phone was on.

Adrien could hear everything.

He heard our slightly hesitant voices. The silences that grew longer. The nervous laughter. The clinking of our glasses. He probably heard my breathing change as the distance between the Canadian and me diminished.

That invisible presence gave me a feeling of safety. Adrien was there. I knew that a single word would be enough for him to join me.

But his presence also made everything infinitely more exciting.

I knew he was listening.

I knew he was imagining.

And sometimes, when I talked to the Canadian, certain words were actually meant for Adrien.

Then I stopped talking.

I moved closer and kissed him.

We were still on the sofa. I felt his hesitation disappear under my lips, his hands become surer, his desire take over his shyness. In a few seconds, the tension that had built up for days burst open.

He pulled me toward the bed.

When he slid my dress down and discovered that I wasn't wearing anything underneath, his expression changed. He paused for a second, as if he needed to check that the woman standing in front of him was indeed real.

I felt naked, of course.

But above all, I felt powerful.

He laid me down and slipped between my thighs. At the first touch of his mouth, a wave of heat ran through me. Violent butterflies filled my stomach. My cheeks burned. My whole body seemed to wake up from a long sleep.

It was another face above me. Other hands. Another breath against my skin.

And somewhere, very close, my husband was hearing my reactions.

So I didn't hold back.

I wanted Adrien to know. I wanted him to hear the pleasure he had made possible for me. Some of my moans belonged to the man in the room. Others crossed the room, the phone, the walls, to reach the one waiting for me just nearby.

I gave him back his desire. Then our bodies came together.

But the intensity was too much for him.

Within minutes, it was already over.

I stayed lying there, out of breath, still carried by excitement, but deeply frustrated. It had been fifteen years since I had known another body. That man was handsome, tender, gentle. I had waited for this meeting, fantasized about this room, imagined this night.

I didn't want it all to stop after five minutes.

I got up and locked myself in the bathroom with my phone.

I texted Adrien.

“Can I stay a little longer to see if he can do it a second time?”

His reply came almost immediately.

“Yes. It's your fantasy.”

I read that sentence several times.

It wasn't just permission.

It was as if he was reminding me why I was there. He didn't want me to come back frustrated for fear of hurting him. He didn't want me to live only half my desire. He was telling me to stay, to enjoy myself, to see it through to the end of what we had imagined together.

I went back to the room.

We ate a little. We talked for almost an hour. The Canadian told me about his life, asked me questions about mine. The atmosphere had become softer, almost familiar, but desire remained present beneath every sentence.

I could see it awakening again in his eyes.

Then he looked at me for a longer time.

He told me he wanted me again.

This time, there was no shyness left.

We found ourselves on the bed with a different urgency. Slower at first, then more and more animal. He held me against him as if he wanted to stop me from slipping away. His hands moved over my body with new confidence. I felt his breath on my neck, his groans against my ear, the force with which he desired me.

And this time, I was hardly playing for the phone anymore.

I was truly letting go.

He pulled me into the shower. Water ran over us, blurred the sensations, made our gestures more instinctive. At one point, he pressed me against the glass. My chest and palms against the cold pane, his body behind mine, my breath turning the surface into mist.

I felt as if I were in a scene I would once have watched and told myself I would never dare to live.

I felt wild.

I felt beautiful.

I felt terribly desirable.

And I knew Adrien was hearing everything.

That thought swept through me in waves. Sometimes it disappeared under pleasure. Then it came back suddenly and made every sensation more intense. The man behind me desired me. The man I loved was listening to me let go. And I, between the two, had never felt so fully alive.

The second time lasted a long time.

Long enough to erase my frustration.

Long enough for that night to become one of those nights you remember long after you've forgotten the dates.

We eventually had one last drink. Then I put my black dress back on. The same dress, but I no longer felt at all like the woman who had worn it a few hours earlier.

Leaving the hotel, I was euphoric.

I walked as if the whole world could see what I had just done. As if something had changed in the way I held my head, set my feet on the ground, inhabited my own body.

I felt powerful.

Not because I had cheated on someone. I had stolen nothing, hidden nothing from the man I loved. On the contrary, that night existed because Adrien had listened to a desire I had long buried. Because he had agreed to look at it with me, honestly.

When he opened the door, he was waiting for me.

His look immediately reassured me.

There was no anger. No coldness. No jealousy.

He was proud.

Proud that I had dared. Proud that I had fulfilled my fantasy. Happy for me, but also visibly eager to take his place back in our story.

I wanted to speak.

He put a finger on my lips.

“Now it's my turn.”

He had asked me not to shower before coming back.

So when he took me in his arms, he buried his face against my neck. He breathed in my skin, my perfume, the smell of the hotel, the trace of that night still on me.

His desire was almost brutal, but never distant.

He wasn't trying to erase the other man.

He wanted to find the woman who was coming back to him, carrying everything she had just lived through.

He touched me with a fervor I didn't know in him. As if he had spent the evening gathering every sound, every imagined image, every silence he heard on the phone. He knew what had happened without having seen it all. I still had the room, the shower, the fogged-up glass, the Canadian's smile in my head.

And suddenly, everything blended together.

The stranger's memories.

My husband's hands.

Another man's desire.

Adrien's love.

I never felt split between two men. I felt found again by the man with whom I had chosen to live this experience.

Afterwards, we talked.

He told me what he had felt listening to me. I told him about my sweaty hands in front of the door, the first kiss, my frustration, my surprise at feeling so free. We were happy. Tired, shaken, still excited, but deeply happy.

The next morning, a thought took hold of me.

I was not only a wife. I was not only a forty-year-old woman in a relationship of fifteen years.

I was still a desired woman.

Desirable.

This first encounter didn't just fulfill a sexual fantasy. It gave me back a way of looking at myself I may have forgotten. And it showed me that candaulism can be something far more than a story of jealousy or possession.

For us, that night, candaulism was a way of turning an individual desire into a couple's experience.

I crossed that bedroom door alone.

But I never lived that night without Adrien.

That Canadian was only the first man in the challenge. The following encounters were very different. Some beautiful, some unsettling, some much more unexpected.

I can tell you about the others, if you'd like to read them. Let me know in the comments.

PS. Adrien took a photo of me just before I left. I'm showing you the black dress he chose for that first encounter.
