It is all the ambiguity at the heart of Plaidoirie d’une soumise, a show by Solène Collin inspired by real events. A man appears before the assize court. He is accused of having assaulted, tortured and humiliated his partner. But his lawyer offers another reading of their story: that of a passionate, loving and consensual sadomasochistic relationship. And this time, the show doesn’t simply leave us to watch. The audience becomes the jury. Through this case, Plaidoirie d’une soumise questions women’s freedom to live out their desires as they wish, and inevitably confronts us with our own view of consent, submission and freedom.
