Erotic comics: when desire learns to hold a pencil
There is something very special about erotic comics. They do not just show bodies. They draw what passes between them: anticipation, unease, play, the glance that lingers a second too long, the hand that has not yet done anything but already says a great deal. That is perhaps where erotic comics become so fascinating. They are not just a matter of nudity or provocation. They are an art of rhythm. One panel holds your breath. Another hints at more. A third cuts away just before. Where a still image could reveal everything at once, comics choose the tempo. They know that desire is not always born from what is shown, but often from what is left suspended. Since the 1960s, adult comics have accompanied movements of freedom, counterculture, feminism, provocation, and graphic experimentation. Barbarella opened a pop and scandalous door. Ah! Nana reminded everyone that women too should be able to tell their desires, their anger, their bodies, and their imaginations. Then other artists, other publishers, and other styles continued this exploration: sometimes elegant, sometimes funny, sometimes raw, sometimes frankly political. What we like today is looking at erotic comics differently. Not as a genre “apart,” hidden at the back of a shelf. But as a laboratory of intimacy. A place where fantasy, consent, power, modesty, self-staging, the male gaze, the female gaze, and that delicious zone where imagination does more than the image can all be questioned. Erotic comics have this rare strength: they can be sensual without being vulgar, explicit without being shallow, funny without being light, unsettling without being aggressive. They can give desire a shape, but also question it. And that is exactly what makes them so current. So if the subject intrigues you, a beautiful opportunity is coming up in Paris: the first Erotic Comics Fair will take place on Sunday, June 28 at La Bellevilloise. Meet artists, signings, booths, drawing masterclasses… An afternoon to discover desire in ink, paper, line, and imagination. 👉 To experience it and not miss a thing, sign up now for the event on WishPride: https://wishpride.com/fr/events/61e19574-d715-428d-a21e-f3ffaf0ba808 A cultural, sensual, and delightfully curious outing.
